COOKEVILLE-Funeral services for Ms. Geneva Spear, 88, of Cookeville and formerly of Celina, will be held Monday January 25th at 1 p.m. in the Cookeville Chapel of Hooper Huddleston and Horner Funeral Home. Bro. Kerry Duke and Bro. Buddy Johnson will officiate. Interment will follow in the Fitzgerald Cemetery in Celina.
Mrs. Spear's family will receive friends Saturday from 11 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Mrs. Spear died Wednesday morning January 20, 2016 in Heritage Point Senior Living in Cookeville. She was born March 28, 1927 in Clay County to the late Charles W. Burris, Sr. and Willie Alma Duke.
Strong willed and independent, Mrs. Spear was a 1945 graduate of Clay County High School and was a graduate of Western Kentucky University. She worked as a director of human resources for the state of Tennessee. She and her sister Wilma built the Dairy Queen in Celina. She was a longtime member of Celina Church of Christ.
She has lived in Cookeville for the past 10 years and has been a beloved member of Jefferson Avenue Church of Christ. She lived an active and vibrant life until her recent illness. Her strength, wisdom and courage were a blessing and inspiration to those who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Walter Vince 'Big Boy' Spear; and by brothers, Charles Burris Jr. and Duke Burris.
She is survived by her daughter, Debbie Billings and husband John of Cookeville; grandson, Neal Nevins of Nashville; sister, Wilma Hayes; nephew, Steve Hayes, both of Cookeville; and by nieces, Sue Stone of Celina and Sandy Sutera of Fountain Run, KY.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Magi Project Gift Fund at Jefferson Ave. Church of Christ, 521 South Jefferson Ave., Cookeville, TN 38501. This ministry provides supplies and gifts to children in need and was near and dear to Ms. Geneva.
